Introduction
Among the final words spoken by Jesus on the Cross, none are more significant than the declaration: “It is finished.”These words announce the completion of the greatest work in human history—the work of redemption.
For centuries, the Old Testament pointed toward the coming Messiah. Sacrifices were offered repeatedly. Priests ministered continually. Prophecies foretold a coming Redeemer. Humanity waited for the day when sin would be fully dealt with and reconciliation with God would be accomplished.
At Calvary, that day arrived.
When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” He was not speaking of His life ending. He was proclaiming that the work the Father had sent Him to accomplish had been completed perfectly. The debt of sin was paid. The demands of divine justice were satisfied. The power of Satan was broken. The way to God was opened.
The finished work of Christ means believers no longer strive to earn salvation. Instead, they receive by faith what Jesus has already accomplished through His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension.
The Father planned redemption, the Son completed redemption, and the Holy Spirit applies redemption. Through the Blood of Jesus, believers now stand in the blessings of a completed salvation.

The Father’s Role
The Father designed and initiated the plan of redemption.
Isaiah 53:10
“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.”
The Cross was not an accident but the fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose.
The Father’s justice required payment for sin, and His love provided the sacrifice.
The Son’s Role
Jesus perfectly fulfilled every requirement necessary for humanity’s redemption.
He accomplished:

- Reconciliation with God
- Victory over Satan

John 17:4
“I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.”
The Son completed everything necessary for salvation.
The Holy Spirit’s Role
The Holy Spirit applies the finished work of Christ to believers.

The Spirit continually points believers back to Christ’s completed work.

It Is Finished (Tetelestai – Τετέλεσται)
John 19:30
Meaning:
- Completed
- Accomplished

- Fully discharged
In ancient times, this word was written across paid debts to indicate full payment.
When Jesus declared “Tetelestai,” He announced that the debt of sin had been paid in full forever.
Nothing can be added to His finished work.

Many believers live as though they must earn what Christ has already provided.

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your eternal plan of redemption. Thank You that You loved humanity enough to provide a perfect sacrifice for sin.
Lord Jesus, thank You for completing the work of salvation on the Cross. Thank You that through Your precious Blood my sins are forgiven, my debt is paid, and my relationship with God is restored.
Holy Spirit, help me live in the reality of Christ’s finished work. Remove every mindset of striving, fear, condemnation, and self-righteousness. Teach me to rest in God’s grace and walk in the victory Jesus has secured.
May my life continually reflect gratitude for what Christ has accomplished and confidence in the power of His redemption.
